AUSTIN, TEXAS - In the last week, over 50 students were arrested at the University of Texas at Austin while participating in a nonviolent anti-war demonstration. Yesterday, 79 students were arrested. The University of Texas at Austin is currently the only school in Texas at which protestors have been met with mass arrests.
Rochelle Garza (she/her), President of the Texas Civil Rights Project, released the following statement:
“Yesterday’s arrests are just another example of the criminalization of constitutional rights in Texas. The Texas Civil Rights Project unequivocally denounces violence and hate in all forms against all people. TCRP advocates for the civil liberties of all Texans, including the First Amendment right to non-violent protest. Peaceful protest is critical to our democracy and student protests have been a vital form of expression in each phase of this nation’s history. Silencing voices is not only divisive and exclusionary – it’s unconstitutional and poses a major threat to our democracy.”
