TEXAS CIVIL RIGHTS ORGANIZATION CONDEMNS DECISION TO BLOCK DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE POLL MONITOR EFFORTS
AUSTIN, TEXAS - Yesterday, Texas Secretary of State Jane Nelson notified the Department of Justice that their plans to monitor elections in various Texas counties on Election Day would not be allowed under Texas law.
According to the Texas Secretary of State’s office, Texas Election Code enumerates who is allowed inside of polling locations, and does not include federal poll monitors.
The Texas Civil Rights Project stands firmly with Texans to protect our right to vote and will ensure that our elections are safe and secure for all.
In response to the announcement, Rochelle Garza (she/her), President of the Texas Civil Rights Project, issued the following statement:
“Texas has a long history of suppressing the vote for communities of color, the elderly, and people with disabilities. When state officials block oversight and transparency of our elections, they are going against the principles that uphold our democracy. The federal government has a duty to monitor elections to ensure fairness and protect every American’s right to vote — there should be nothing to hide. TCRP will continue to stand with Texas voters, in and outside of the courts.”
###
The Texas Civil Rights Project is boldly serving the movement for equality and justice in and out of the courts. We use our tools of litigation and legal advocacy to protect and advance the civil rights of everyone in Texas, and we partner with communities across the state to serve the rising movement for social justice. We undertake our work with a vision of a Texas in which all communities can thrive with dignity, justice and without fear.
